Why Did Jesus Come Here?

Sin separates us from God. While God is not a dictator and allows us to have free will, He would rather all of us have a relationship and closeness to him. Through Moses we were given the law- no one could measure up to the standards of the law, except the one who gave up his life for us. So why did Jesus come? Jesus came to fulfill the law and conquer death/ the grave. He came for you and me, in hopes we would believe in him and be reconciled to God.

The Law

Reading in Genesis, you will discover how sin crept into the world. Later we were given the law (10 commandments are some of them), and people were unable to live by them. That is why you will hear of people sacrificing lambs, it was a way of temporarily providing forgiveness for sin. People were living very far from God, until he provided a way out through Jesus.

Jesus sacrificing his life for us

“It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn into two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last breath.”

Luke 23:44-46

Jesus came into this world and was tempted by everything we were for 40 days, and he remained sinless. He was able to fulfill the law when we couldn’t. That is why he was able to offer himself as a sacrifice for us. As it says above, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Jesus came to fulfill his Father’s will.

What does that mean for us?

This is the good news of the gospel. By believing and having faith in Jesus we are able to be forgiven when we repent. He made a way for us to be deemed righteous in our Father’s eyes. This new way is by faith.

“For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles(us), through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”

Galatians 3:10-14
Quote for why Jesus came here.

By Grace, through faith

It’s referring to Abraham and remember, he was deemed righteous by his faith in God. God is not looking for someone to perfectly abide by every law because we simply cannot. We are sinful by nature and we all fall short in life. Thankfully, by God’s grace, we still have a way into the kingdom of the Father. I’ll say it again, that way is by believing that Jesus Christ came here to die for your sins, not only to be risen three days later, but to be your personal Lord and Savior. This allows us to be reconciled to God and be adopted into the family.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

John 3:16-18

What are you a slave to?

Jesus has set us free and we are able to ask for forgiveness when we sin and be forgiven, but that does not mean we should recklessly disobey the law. The law helps us see where our desires lay so we can bring what’s done in the darkness into the light, by inviting Jesus into our sin. He is the only one that can help us. When we believe and gain the holy spirit we have a thirst to do what is right- that is why many things we used to do in the past no longer intrigue us. I like what Paul says in Romans,

“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey- whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

But thanks to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

Romans 6:15-18

A Reliable Person to put your hope in

Jesus is our savior and offers us hope that can not be destroyed. He came because he wanted to obey his Father. He came because he loves us. Jesus knew he was the only one that could save us. And for that, I am forever grateful. You may be thinking, “Now that I believe what am I supposed to do?” That’s a discussion for next Thursday. 😉

With love,

Emilee
